The designer and host of Secret Celebrity Renovation shares how to style a kid’s space with room to grow

Global design company West Elm unveils its latest design project for West Elm Kids with celebrity designer Sabrina Soto. Soto teamed up with John Longo and Blair Cloughen from West Elm’s Design Crew to create a bedroom that would foster her daughter Olivia’s imagination from elementary school well into junior high. “Olivia challenged us to get in touch with our inner child for a bit of magic,” says Blair.

Utilizing West Elm Kids’ design-driven products, Soto and the team created a sophisticated, original, and age-neutral room that daughter Olivia can enjoy now and well into the future. Pairing classic, core pieces with whimsical ones helped to create a space that would stand the test of time, yet still feel playful and young. “When you look around the space, you can’t really tell how old she is and I like that,” says Soto. With the help of the West Elm Design Crew, Soto sourced versatile pieces that work double-time and plan for the future, while still feeling youthful and fun, including:

  • West Elm’s Urban Daybed & Trundle ($1,199 - $1,499) serves as a comfy sofa for playtime, plus an obvious spot for sleepovers
  • With pillows and blankets on top, the Mid-Century Toy Chest ($399) makes a welcoming seat for friends or solo reading time
  • A coloring corner now, West Elm’s small-but-mighty Zane Mini Desk ($449) will be a homework zone later
  • West Elm’s whimsical Willa Woodland Duvet ($79) provides a burst of youthful color that can easily be replaced down the road

The final result features transitional furniture pieces alongside unique textiles, bold patterns, and dimensional art pieces that give the room layers and elevate the space. Remaining true to West Elm’s ‘Good Design’ approach, the space features sustainably sourced, handcrafted, Fair Trade Certified, 100% organic cotton, and Contract Grade products that are good for kids, good for the planet, and good for the home.
