Reveal: Sabrina Soto levels up her daughter’s room with big-kid style, just in time for kindergarten

The designer and host of Secret Celebrity Renovation shares how to style a kid’s space with room to grow

Global design company West Elm unveils its latest design project for West Elm Kids with celebrity designer Sabrina Soto. Soto teamed up with John Longo and Blair Cloughen from West Elm’s Design Crew to create a bedroom that would foster her daughter Olivia’s imagination from elementary school well into junior high. “Olivia challenged us to get in touch with our inner child for a bit of magic,” says Blair.

Utilizing West Elm Kids’ design-driven products, Soto and the team created a sophisticated, original, and age-neutral room that daughter Olivia can enjoy now and well into the future. Pairing classic, core pieces with whimsical ones helped to create a space that would stand the test of time, yet still feel playful and young. “When you look around the space, you can’t really tell how old she is and I like that,” says Soto. With the help of the West Elm Design Crew, Soto sourced versatile pieces that work double-time and plan for the future, while still feeling youthful and fun, including:

  • West Elm’s Urban Daybed & Trundle ($1,199 - $1,499) serves as a comfy sofa for playtime, plus an obvious spot for sleepovers
  • With pillows and blankets on top, the Mid-Century Toy Chest ($399) makes a welcoming seat for friends or solo reading time
  • A coloring corner now, West Elm’s small-but-mighty Zane Mini Desk ($449) will be a homework zone later
  • West Elm’s whimsical Willa Woodland Duvet ($79) provides a burst of youthful color that can easily be replaced down the road

The final result features transitional furniture pieces alongside unique textiles, bold patterns, and dimensional art pieces that give the room layers and elevate the space. Remaining true to West Elm’s ‘Good Design’ approach, the space features sustainably sourced, handcrafted, Fair Trade Certified, 100% organic cotton, and Contract Grade products that are good for kids, good for the planet, and good for the home.

West Elm’s Design Crew services are available free to all customers to help answer style questions and advise on room planning via an online chat, virtual consultations by video, phone, and email, and in-store by appointment. West Elm Kids Debuts it’s First Collaboration with Authors of The Old Truck

Brothers Jarrett and Jerome Pumphrey’s children’s story comes to life in an exclusive collection of baby and kids bedding, décor, and more.

Brooklyn, NY – September 13, 2021 – Today, global design company West Elm debuts its first collaboration for West Elm Kids interpreting children’s book The Old Truck, authored and illustrated by brothers Jarrett and Jerome Pumphrey. The Pumphrey brothers join West Elm’s roster of artists and collaborators as the first authors to debut an exclusive collection for West Elm Kids. The limited-edition collection includes 13 baby and kid-friendly pieces that draw from The Old Truck book’s block-print illustrations. Priced starting at $14.50, the collection features brightly colored prints and patterns on quilts, pillows, rugs, wallpaper, and home accessories. The Old Truck x West Elm Kids collection is available beginning today at www.WestElm.com/TheOldTruck.

The Old Truck tells the story of family, farm life, hard work, and persistence, through the lens of a young Black girl’s imagination. The Pumphrey brothers drew inspiration for The Old Truck from the iconic image of old, aging trucks sitting in the fields of central Texas farms.

“It’s exciting to see our hard work and persistence, key values of the story itself, pay off in the form of this new collection,” says Jerome. “To be able to share these values with a new generation of kids through the story of The Old Truck is an honor.”

“And to know that they might be sitting on The Old Truck Play Rug or wrapped up in an Old Truck quilt while listening to the story really brings it full circle,” Jarrett says.

The brother’s 250+ hand-drawn and hand-cut stamps served as inspiration for the West Elm in-house design team who interpreted The Old Truck’s central theme and iconography into a modern and playful collection. The gender-neutral assortment for nurseries, kids’ rooms, and playrooms features sustainably sourced bedding and BCI cotton textiles. The Modern Patchwork Quilt ($169 - $199,) available in Full/Queen and Twin sizes, marries classic patchwork with contemporary patterns, giving a twist to a timeless staple. The handwoven Quilt Tapestry ($88.69), made of Fair Trade wool and 100% BCI/Organic cotton, provides a unique decoration for any child’s wall with a spectrum of subtle, pastel hues. Favorite illustrations from the book are recreated in the hand-felted and stitched Sun Pillow ($39.99) and lamp in the shape of an old truck ($179). The collection is complete with an exclusive stamp set ($24.35), allowing for children to recreate the brother’s illustrations all on their own.

For their debut picture book, the brothers created over 250 handmade stamps for its block-print illustrations. Each kraft-foam stamp was hand-drawn and cut by hand with an Exacto-knife. After being stamped in black and white, each page was scanned into the computer and then put together in a digital composition with full color.

To learn more about The Old Truck x West Elm collection and how together with the West Elm design team the Pumphrey brothers brought their creations to life, please visit www.Press.WestElm.com/TheOldTruck. To view the full collection in West Elm’s look book, visit the West Elm press room at www.press.westelm.com/lookbook/theoldtruck.

Minted Debuts its First Furniture Line Exclusively at West Elm

Furnishings Feature Continuously Refreshed Textile Designs from

Minted’s Marketplace of Independent Artists

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (July 15, 2021) -- Minted, the marketplace that brings the best from independent artists and designers to consumers everywhere, and global design company West Elm, today announced a collaboration that introduces artist-designed home furnishings exclusively to WestElm.com and West Elm stores nationwide.  The Minted + West Elm furniture collection marks the first time Minted, the pioneer in crowdsourcing design, has expanded its reach into the world of furniture. The partnership builds upon the fine art collection that Minted has offered at West Elm since 2013, offering customers the opportunity to pair art and furniture from Minted’s independent artists.

The Minted + West Elm furniture collection includes 14 upholstered pieces and offers customers their choice of more than 2,000 options of silhouette, pattern, color, and leg finish. New textile designs were created by artists in Minted’s global community, submitted to Minted’s design competitions, and in many cases are hand-painted or illustrated. Minted’s proprietary algorithms parsed millions of consumer votes to determine the featured designs and predict color trends. New patterns will be released in subsequent special edition drops planned for Holiday 2021 and Spring 2022.  The Minted + West Elm furniture collection will be exclusively available for purchase at WestElm.com/Minted  and West Elm stores nationwide beginning July 2021.

“We’re proud to partner with West Elm on our furniture debut,” stated Mariam Naficy, Founder, Co-CEO, and Chairman of Minted. “Our collaboration amplifies the work of a diverse array of artists from around the world. The competition and voting process that we pioneered 14 years ago discovers the best work submitted to Minted challenges, regardless of the artist’s background, education or geography.  We’re excited that this is one step further that Minted takes on its journey to create inclusion for artists everywhere.”

“Our collaboration with Minted combines our digital-first approach with our commitment to offering original and modern designs for the home,” said Alex Bellos, president of West Elm. “We used Minted’s data and customer insights to select artwork from a global community of emerging artists and illustrators, and created a collection that offers customers more choice and personalization when shopping WestElm.com and West Elm stores nationwide this fall.”

Minted and West Elm share a commitment to supporting independent artists, including championing the careers of diverse artists. This collection will launch with a carefully curated assortment of fabric patterns designed by 21 independent artists from Minted’s artist community, including artists from Mumbai, India; Geneva, Switzerland; and Nairobi, Kenya.  As with all Minted products, a portion of every purchase will directly support the independent artist who designed the pattern.

The Minted + West Elm furniture assortment includes upholstered ottomans, occasional chairs, footstools, screens, benches, headboards, and beds. Minted and West Elm selected a luxurious linen cotton textile that was chosen both for its natural beauty and for its ability to execute the intricate artistic patterns created by Minted’s independent artists. Every piece is made-to-order and a statement addition to one’s home decor collection that can be kept forever. Pricing begins at $249 for an Occasional Ottoman and extends to $1,899 for a Queen-Sized Demilune Bed.

Minted will launch new Design Challenges to source the next patterns for upcoming Minted + West Elm furniture collections. Anyone may enter the Challenge, regardless of connections or pedigree. Consumers will vote to select the winners, helping deserving independent artists break into national retail.
