Soto teamed up with John Longo and Blair Cloughen from West Elm’s Design Crew to create a bedroom that would foster her daughter Olivia’s imagination from elementary school well into junior high. “Olivia challenged us to get in touch with our inner child for a bit of magic,” says Blair.

Utilizing West Elm Kids’ design-driven products, Soto and the team created a sophisticated, original, and age-neutral room that daughter Olivia can enjoy now and well into the future. Pairing classic, core pieces with whimsical ones helped to create a space that would stand the test of time, yet still feel playful and young. “When you look around the space, you can’t really tell how old she is and I like that,” says Soto. West Elm Kids Debuts it’s First Collaboration with Authors of The Old Truck  

Brothers Jarrett and Jerome Pumphrey’s children’s story comes to life in an exclusive collection of baby and kids bedding, décor, and more.  

Brooklyn, NY – September 13, 2021 – Today, global design company West Elm debuts its first collaboration for West Elm Kids interpreting children’s book The Old Truck, authored and illustrated by brothers Jarrett and Jerome Pumphrey. The Pumphrey brothers join West Elm’s roster of artists and collaborators as the first authors to debut an exclusive collection for West Elm Kids. The limited-edition collection includes 13 baby and kid-friendly pieces that draw from The Old Truck book’s block-print illustrations. Priced starting at $14.50, the collection features brightly colored prints and patterns on quilts, pillows, rugs, wallpaper, and home accessories. The Old Truck x West Elm Kids collection is available beginning today at www.WestElm.com/TheOldTruck.   

The Old Truck tells the story of family, farm life, hard work, and persistence, through the lens of a young Black girl’s imagination. The Pumphrey brothers drew inspiration for The Old Truck from the iconic image of old, aging trucks sitting in the fields of central Texas farms. 

“It’s exciting to see our hard work and persistence, key values of the story itself, pay off in the form of this new collection,” says Jerome. “To be able to share these values with a new generation of kids through the story of The Old Truck is an honor.”   

“And to know that they might be sitting on The Old Truck Play Rug or wrapped up in an Old Truck quilt while listening to the story really brings it full circle,” Jarrett says.  

The brother’s 250+ hand-drawn and hand-cut stamps served as inspiration for the West Elm in-house design team who interpreted The Old Truck’s central theme and iconography into a modern and playful collection. The gender-neutral assortment for nurseries, kids’ rooms, and playrooms features sustainably sourced bedding and BCI cotton textiles. The Modern Patchwork Quilt ($169 - $199,) available in Full/Queen and Twin sizes, marries classic patchwork with contemporary patterns, giving a twist to a timeless staple. The handwoven Quilt Tapestry ($88.69), made of Fair Trade wool and 100% BCI/Organic cotton, provides a unique decoration for any child’s wall with a spectrum of subtle, pastel hues. Favorite illustrations from the book are recreated in the hand-felted and stitched Sun Pillow ($39.99) and lamp in the shape of an old truck ($179). The collection is complete with an exclusive stamp set ($24.35), allowing for children to recreate the brother’s illustrations all on their own.  

For their debut picture book, the brothers created over 250 handmade stamps for its block-print illustrations. Each kraft-foam stamp was hand-drawn and cut by hand with an Exacto-knife. After being stamped in black and white, each page was scanned into the computer and then put together in a digital composition with full color.

Minted Debuts its First Furniture Line Exclusively at West Elm

Furnishings Feature Continuously Refreshed Textile Designs from 

Minted’s Marketplace of Independent Artists

The Minted + West Elm furniture collection includes 14 upholstered pieces and offers customers their choice of more than 2,000 options of silhouette, pattern, color, and leg finish. New textile designs were created by artists in Minted’s global community, submitted to Minted’s design competitions, and in many cases are hand-painted or illustrated. Minted’s proprietary algorithms parsed millions of consumer votes to determine the featured designs and predict color trends. REI Co-op + West Elm Launch New Collection to Get Outside, Together

The second edition of the retail collaboration features co-designed outdoor lifestyle products that bring the comforts of home to summer outdoor escapes

The continuation of the partnership marks the first wholly co-designed lifestyle collection that bridges the two retailers’ distinct expertise and original designs to an array of outdoor products. Together, both brands have teamed up to expand upon the first installment introduced in Spring 2020 to bring 10 newly designed, limited-edition pieces that emphasize comfort, style and convenience when getting outside. Utilizing West Elm Kids’ design-driven products, Sherman Samuel introduces a playful, original, and modern room while staying true to West Elm’s ’Good Design’ approach with GREENGUARD, Fair Trade Certified, and 100 percent organic cotton products. Designed and crafted within a raw studio, Sherman Samuel took  complete creative control to incorporate her own interesting architectural elements and craft a unique bedroom-playroom hybrid layout. The final result features whimsical structural details, striking blue wainscotting and hand-painted striped walls, playful pattern mixing and plenty of room for creativity while leaning into kid-friendly design.

“For kids’ rooms, my inspiration comes from children’s books, nature and my kids’ themselves,” says Sarah, a mother of two. “My daughter’s favorite color is blue, so I chose blue as the main color for this space. Both my kids are super into books and I am, too. Having a little library or reading nook like this inside my kids’ bedroom would be amazing.”

Following social distancing guidelines, The Design Room challenge came to life entirely remote from Sherman Samuel via Zoom, emails, and calls from her Grand Rapids, Michigan home.

West Elm Introduces ‘West Elm Collective’ Creator Program

West Elm’s first ambassador program spotlights brand offerings through the lens of Insiders and Tastemakers

BROOKLYN, NY – APRIL 8, 2021 – Global design company West Elm today announces the launch of West Elm Collective, a new ambassador program highlighting industry thought leaders and emerging content creators whose distinct perspectives and eye for design will inspire customers to explore its original, modern designs and sustainable, and affordable products. The West Elm Collective program marks the evolution of the brand’s ongoing commitment to elevating up-and-coming creative voices and expressing personal style through the lens of a community of creators. 

The West Elm Collective debuts with 20 Insiders, influential social media creatives, and Tastemakers, an industry authority spotlighted each month, spanning communities in multiple industries and life stages across fashion, wellness, parenthood, home and lifestyle. The program will offer Insiders and Tastemakers their own curated West Elm shop page to share favorite original designs and product recommendations with their audiences and express their personal style for West Elm customers to discover tips, advice and inspiration through westelm.com/Collective beginning April 8.
