West Elm Commits to the Fifteen Percent Pledge

Brooklyn, NY (July 08, 2020) – As the 15 Percent Pledge continues to advocate for economic equality by urging major retailers to allocate 15% of their shelf space to Black-owned businesses, today Brooklyn-based, global design company, West Elm, is committing to the 15 Percent Pledge through the retailer’s brand collaborations, West Elm LOCAL shelf space, and hiring practices. In addition to West Elm’s 15% benchmark promises, the home furnishings retailer will make a multi-year donation pledge to the 15 Percent Pledge.

“The 15 Percent Pledge was launched out of the need for increased representation in the workforce and financial equality for Black-owned businesses,” said Aurora James, founder, 15 Percent Pledge Foundation. “We could not be happier that West Elm has stepped up and pledged its commitment to supporting a community of Black-owned businesses, artists, designers, and makers. As a champion of social responsibility causes, we commend West Elm for the brands’ leadership in the design space and look forward to working with them on their accountability measures to hit the 15% benchmarks.”

In making the commitment to the 15 Percent Pledge, West Elm plans to:

  • Increase West Elm’s design collaborations with Black designers, artists, and Black-owned brands to a minimum of 15% of total
  • Increase the share of Black makers and small businesses within West Elm LOCAL to a 15% minimum 
  • Increase the share of Black employees within West Elm’s corporate workforce to a minimum of 15%, as well as strengthening the retail to corporate pipeline

In 2014, West Elm made headlines when the global design company announced plans to help drive Fair Trade into an entirely new sector and became the first international home furnishings retailer to partner with Fair Trade USA. Coming up on the five-year anniversary of the brand’s commitment this month, West Elm reflects on the progress made, the future ahead, and the shift in the retail industry.

In the past five years, West Elm has made strides in its journey with Fair Trade USA. In 2014, the global design company pledged $1 million in Fair Trade premiums when it launched 38 products sourced from one Fair Trade Certified™ factory. Having fulfilled its pledge, West Elm joined its parent company Williams-Sonoma, Inc. in 2017 to re-up commitments, aiming to donate $3 million in Fair Trade premiums by 2020. Starting today, customers can participate in the West Elm Holiday House Challenges through the mobile game, Design Home, where users can live the life of an interior decorator to virtually design the West Elm Holiday House from anywhere in the world. The West Elm Holiday House Challenges are open October 1 - 8 to Design Home users in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and United Kingdom, bringing the West Elm Holiday House to customers everywhere.

The West Elm Holiday 2019 campaign helps customers celebrate at home this season by bringing together content and experiences across the brand’s print, digital and social channels. This month, West Elm taps cook, author and columnist Alison Roman for tips and recipes from her new book Nothing Fancy.
