Meet Hemp

West Elm Introduces All-New Hemp Bedding Collection

BROOKLYN, NY (January 13, 2020) -- This month, Brooklyn-based, global design company, West Elm expands its assortment of consciously made bedding collections with the introduction of its newest material offering — hemp. The new Fair Trade Certified™ collection of hemp bedding includes sheets, duvets, and a coverlet – all thoughtfully designed in-house with an emphasis on style and comfort using natural materials and plant dyes to create soft colorways. West Elm is leading the industry in bringing hemp to market as a bedding material and is today the most recognized home retailer to offer a complete collection of original and modern designs exclusively at WestElm.com, WestElm.Ca, and select West Elm stores throughout North America.

“We created our new hemp bedding with our customers and the environment in mind, putting material innovation, function, and sustainability at the forefront of our design process,” said Jeffrey Hannoosh, SVP of product design and development at West Elm. “Hemp’s reduced environmental footprint, breathability and relaxed look and feel is well-suited for customers looking for a natural, more eco-friendly fabric for their home.”

Hemp is generally considered to have a low environmental impact because growing the hemp plant requires significantly less water and land than other conventional bedding materials and does not typically require the use of pesticides. The crop can also be regenerative and is known to extract toxins to improve soil quality. West Elm blends its hemp bedding with 100% organic cotton for a softer feel and uses plant dyes to create the collection’s colorways: Radix isatidis leaf is used to achieve a Hazy Blue, Myrobalan is used to create a Misty Grey, and Desert Flax is created using the Eucalyptus leaf.

West Elm today offers nine materials in its bedding assortment with the launch of hemp. This Spring, the global design company wants to help educate customers on why #WEMaterialMatters when it comes to choosing bedding for the best night’s sleep. Each material offers distinct qualities, providing customers with a variety of options to create a restful retreat at home. Customers can choose from:

Belgian Linen:

Ideal for people who sleep hot or like a relaxed, natural look. This Fair Trade Certified™ linen also boasts hypoallergenic properties.

TENCEL™

Ideal for people looking for a luxe, polished look and sleep warmer than most. Sustainably made from eucalyptus fibers making this Fair Trade Certified™ material easy-to-care for and wrinkle resistant.

Washed Cotton Percale

Light and breathable with a relaxed feel, this ultra-soft material is comfortable year-round and, like all of West Elm’s cotton bedding, is certified organic.
